Our eyes are beginning to open. A large part of Brussels’ charm has already disappeared; destroyed by bulldozers, buried under desperately unoccupied office blocks.
If, for the moment, this gentrification is being rolled out in a gentle fashion, in the form of neighbourhoods becoming trendy without becoming chic; this dynamic precedes a more extensive one of social selection...
Nevertheless, a new way of life, a new urban constellation has proclaimed its presence: the neo-lofts and sky high constructions destined to welcome a new population with large incomes and panoramic views.

Veel van de Brusselse charme verdween reeds lang geleden. Vernietigd door bulldozers, en begraven onder leegstaande kantoorgebouwen. Een nieuwe manier van leven en wonen krijgt hier vorm, neo lofts en hippe woonblokken komen de sociale segregatie bevestigen.
Verjonging – net als de soortgelijke termen vernieuwing of heropleving gemeengoed in het politieke, institutionele of mediatieke discours – is vanuit sociaal oogpunt neutraal en kan dus niet anders dan instemming opwekken. Wie zou er inderdaad a priori voorstander zijn van het wegkwijnen van de stad? De term gentrificatie heeft de verdienste het sociale vraagstuk niet te verdoezelen.

On commence à le savoir: une grande partie du charme de Bruxelles a déjà disparu, détruit par les bulldozers, enfoui sous les tours de bureaux désespérément inoccupées.
Pourtant, un nouveau savoir-vivre, un nouveau type de logements s'annonce: celui des néo-lofts et des constructions en hauteur destinés à accueillir une nouvelle population aux revenus larges et panoramiques.
Si, pour l'instant, la gentrification se déroule à Bruxelles de manière soft, sous la forme de quartiers devenus à la mode sans être encore chics, ces dynamiques procèdent à une large sélection sociale...
